Taronga Park Zoo

We went to Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney on Monday as part of a group organised by one of our local homeschooling mums.  It was a great (although long & exhausting day!).  We had entry to the zoo through the day where we all went our own way.  To see everything you'd be running around all day, so we made the most of seeing the exotic animals and left the Australian animals - we're quite familiar with seeing those in other places (including in the wild!).

My favourite was the elephants - these two baby elephants were playing around in the water and wrestling with each other.  They were just so funny!

Giraffes - did you know they can pick their nose with their tongue?!

This young gorilla was jealous of the attention the baby was getting and kept nipping at his mother to annoy her!

Kodiak Bear - she was 33 years old and arthritic - very cute though!

Our other favourite - Casey the Leopard Seal.  He was 'dancing & singing' - twirling around in the water and making the most wonderful sounds.  They should put it on a relaxation CD and sell it!

The always cute Meerkats!

Mr Tiger :)

Zebra - did you know every zebra's stripe pattern is unique?

After the zoo closed, we went into their education centre and were split into 2 groups (there were about 60 of us there all together).  Our group firstly got to go and get friendly with some lizards.  Then they fed us with a BBQ tea - sausages, rolls, salad & pasta salad.  Finally, we went with our guides back around the zoo again for a couple of hours to see, hear & smell the zoo at night.  It wasn't quite what I was expecting, but really interesting to have a guided tour and hear anecdotes about the animals.  The crocodile gliding up to the edge of the enclosure lit only by a red spotlight was quite creepy!

Billy a bit hesitant about patting the Blue tongue lizard!

Sydney at night.
We got home about 11:30pm - we live about 2.5hrs away - so it was a very long day but definitely memorable.

Wow! Sounds like a great day out. I love the zoo, but have never been there at night. Did you watch the bird show? That is always entertaining!

It really was. Sometimes there are advantages in doing things as a 'school group'! We missed the bird show - we always seemed to be at the opposite end of the park when it was on :(

What a great report! Those photos are so cute ... we share your love of baby elephants (all elephants actually). I didn't know that giraffe's could pick their nose (I bet the kids all enjoyed that gross fact).

Glad it went well. Would have loved to have taken Carter but another time. It would have been a long day for Faith & I. Now that event took a bit of organising so glad it was a hit. Blessings, Renelle

Sounds like a great but VERY long day at the zoo. Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I haven't been in years but am planning taking the girls next weekend (after dropping Kevin at the airport). I mainly want to go play with my camera :-).

Oooh, I love tigers and zebras. And elephants. It's nice to see photos but the first time I ever saw a zebra I was shocked at how gorgeous it was up close.
