"Hatching the Past" dinosaur egg & nest exhibition

This morning Billy and I went to the Newcastle Museum to see the new exhibition "Hatching the Past".  It's a collection of dinosaur eggs, reconstructed nests and real dinosaur bones - most of which you could actually touch.

You could even see gnaw marks on this bone :)

Afterwards we met up with my parents, sister and nieces to celebrate my mum's birthday with prawns for lunch, sitting on the foreshore, watching the myriad of boats coming in and out of the harbour.  It was a tough day :)

What a fun field trip. Looking at the photos of the bones and eggs gave me goosebumps! Isn't it amazing how these beasts could actually exist at one time? We're watching physics videos about how it's impossible for huge beasts to exist today, and it's mind-boggling what a number of million of years will do eh?

Very cool. Is the museum opened up properly for business again? If so, we may have to plan a trip up there, we have never been to the Newcastle museum before. The exhibition looks awesome.

Suji - that sounds a really interesting video. Its pretty mind-boggling to be touching bones that are that old :)

Karisma - yep, its all properly opened. Its in the Honeysuckle precinct, you'd get off at Civic Station. http://www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/about_newcastle/newcastle_museum

Its only smallish, but has some pretty cool stuff. The hands-on Supernova (Science) exhibitions are Billy's favourites, but there's also lots of cool stuff about Newcastle history, including a BHP exhibition. And best of all, its free except for the special exhibitions like the dinosaur one! (Although paying for parking is a killer :( )

Sounds like a lovely day - education, family, and relaxation all in one day.
